Hluhluwe Rhino Charge 2009
The route will follow a similar route as the 2008 edition however Gareth and Gavin are currently planning some really interesting new challenges and deviations that will only add to last years super enjoyable ride. The Rhino Charge is a fast and relatively flat ride which makes it ideal for both 25km novices and those looking to ride a 50km ride without any chronic climbs. The emphasis on the route design is 'maximum fun without the pain'.
Starting at the Hotel the route hits the gravel and barrels down into beautiful open bushveld, passes through two game reserves and the Vergelee' conservancy. River crossings, singletrack and lots of rideable tech sections make for an epic ride. No sand, no tar, and no portages! Smooth riding surfaces and nicely groomed singletrack are cut and raked before you ride.
Hot showers are provided after the ride courtesy of the Protea Hluhluwe Hotel and a full bar with a variety of Boerie Rolls, Chicken Kebabs and cold refreshments is available on the lawns in front of the Hotel. There is a swimming pool to cool off in and a full restaurant and airconditioned lounge for family members looking to relax while the race is underway. Entertainment for kids and a 10km family ride along a 10km fenced pineapple plantation starts just after 09h00 when the main event riders have departed.
Accomodation is plentiful in the area with it's many camping grounds , lodges and guest houses. You can contact the Elephant Coast Tourism Association at 035 5620353 and they will give you a variety of options to suit your budget. There will be a 20 km fun ride on the Saturday afternoon preceding the race and it starts at Hluhluwe River Lodge at 14h00 sharp ( see http://www.hluhluwe.co.za/ for directions ). The 20km fun ride is suitable for fit and technically proficient riders and there will be a shorter 3km ride for those looking for an easy spin with the family.
